Carbon County residents participated in the annual Soroptimist winetasting charity event on Friday, Nov. 10 at the Carbon County Club. Attendees were presented with a new format, setting this year's event apart from previous years.
Instead of a dinner being served after the winetasting portion of the event, all the wine was paired with great tasting food selections like salmon au courant. There was even a station featuring saki and sushi.
Guest were encouraged to try new foods and wines as they mingled throughout the event.
Another change this year was an art sale featuring local women artists. There were seven artists featuring a variety of work from paintings and sculpture to hand-made basket works. Twenty percent of what each artist made goes to the Price Soroptimist Club to fund service projects in the community and abroad.
The Price Soroptimist Club is part of Soroptimist International. Soroptimist stands for "Best for Women" and its mission is bettering the lives of women and girls throughout the community and world.
The winetasting is the main fundraising event for the local club to raise money for the service projects they do.
Past projects have included assisting the Helper Mission remodel the rooms on the floor dedicated to women and families. Also the club bought a large professional hair dryer for one of the nursing homes so the ladies could get their hair done on site.
The Family Support Center, angel tree families and many other local entities have benefited over the years from the generosity of the local Soroptimist Club.
The club also gives out two $500 scholarships each year to local recipients. The Violet Richardson Scholorship is for girls ages 14 to 17 who are involved in volunteer activities in the community. The Women's Opportunity Award goes to a woman who is 18 years or older and is the prime bread winner for her family and working on improving her situation through education.
Information about projects, grant funds and scholarships is available from Soroptimist President Rebecca Mason at the local RSVP office.
