The Carbon Dino Volleyball team recently returned from a grueling preseason tournament.
The event called the Tournament of Champions featured all the top teams from the state. Some of the teams participating are ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Brighton and Lone Peak are among those elite.
So Coach Bruce Bean knew this would be a test for his young team. Even though they lost more than they won, the team gained something much more valuable than a preseason victory. They gained experience and a sense of team work.
"This was a high level of play," Bean stated, "and we were able to work some things out and found chemistry for our team."
He noted that throughout the tournament the team was discovering that what they thought were their strengths did not always pan out. But, in addition, they also realized what they thought were their weaknesses actually turned into being their strengths.
Even though they racked up some losses, the team held its own against some of the powerhouses.
The Lady Dinos forced Lone Peak to play four games and the Utah Valley school was one of the best the tournament had to throw at the Carbon girls.
Carbon ended up winning the Copper division. They walked away in 13th place out of a field of 16 teams.
Bean feels like the team is getting better every day, which is a good thing as they approach regular Region 8 play.
They will begin that play on Sept. 14 against Juan Diego at home. But before that they have several more games on which to sharpen their skills. They travel to Lehi for another tournament later this week and then they will return home to take on Park City on Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dinogym.
