Tough Start Leads to Victory As CHS Girls Soccer Starts Up Season

Sun Advocate sports reporter

It has been a tough start for the Carbon girl's soccer team this year.

The season opened with an away game on Aug. 10 at Tooele. Carbon lost 2-0. But coach Tanya Henrie was not too worried about the first game.

"I feel it wasn't a bad loss due to the fact that our girls are young and we have girls playing some new positions they have never played before," Henrie acknowledged.

The team played a tough defense, although they let a lot get through. Goalie Rebecca Rummel made a lot of great saves to keep Carbon in the game. Henrie was pleased with her performance.

"She (Rummel) kept her composure through the whole game and was a great leader to the team," she stated. "All in all, I think we played a decent first game considering all the young inexperience we have right now on the team."

After playing Tooele, the team traveled to the South Summit Tournament to play.

The tournament began on Aug. 11 with the team playing two junior varsity games in the morning and then two varsity games in the afternoon. It proved to be a long tough day for the girls.

The varsity game against South Summit was a close one. The squad was able to fight to a 1-1 tie at the half.

Felicia Olmos was the only scorer for the Carbon. South Summit scored one more time in the second half and the Dinos ended up losing the game 2 to 1.

Henrie felt the team really gave it their all, but couldn't hold on for the win. The heat of the artificial turf field had an affect on their play.

After about only an hour break the squad faced Bear River with a very exhausted team. Trying to stay close, the team was only down 2-0 at the half. After the half Henrie felt like her team gave up. They ended up losing 9-0.

"After that game I knew we had a lot of work ahead of us," Henrie stated.

The team regrouped and went up against Grand on Aug. 13th. They came away with a 3-2 victory.

The scorers for the game were Kayla Namanny, Hanna Downard, and Natasha Henrie.

It was a come from behind win. Carbon was down 2 - 1 at the half and the girls knew they had to step it up to win. They proved they could get the job done and it earned them their first win of the season.

Henrie feels like the squad has a lot of preparations to make before the next game if they want to keep winning. But it is still early in the season.

The next game will be on Tuesday Aug. 22 at home against Union. Game time is at 1:00 on the Carbon High soccer field.
