|KiLee Tanner measures carefully when she makes her great, great banana bread in her grandmothers kitchen.|
If you ask KiLee Tanner what her favorite thing to eat is, she admits with a smile, "I'm expensive! Steak, crab legs and shrimp!"
The 10-year-old will be in fifth grade at Sally Mauro Elementary in the fall
But until then, she is keeping busy with piano, bowling league, dance and helping her grandmother, Maurine Tanner, babysit her younger siblings while their mom is at work.
Sometimes she squeezes in some reading time, but mostly she loves to dance. She has been doing it since she was two, and is currently a member of Linda Johnstun's Junior Non-stops.
Her goal is to be a teacher when she grows up. She also likes to travel and has visited 20 states and Canada.
KiLee likes to cook, and cookies, pizza, and chicken casserole are part of her repertoire. She and Grandma Maurine can often be found side by side at the kitchen counter, whipping up a batch of Maurine's grandmothers recipe for banana bread.
`One of Maurine's few memories of her grandmother, Elizabeth Cunningham Hollingshead, is that of her standing at the door with a plate of the bread in her hands.
"I've often thought how hard it must have been to get bananas to that isolated homestead in Lyman, Wyoming back then. What a treat this must have been."
KiLee has followed in both grandmothers footsteps and makes this treat regularly.
"We take it to church, and everyone in the family loves it! We always make a lot and then freeze it," she notes as she mixes a batch, carefully measuring the ingredients.
Grandma helps her pour the batter into the pans, and then KiLee sits down with baby sister Tatum for "the best part" - licking the bowl!
KiLee's great-great grandmother Hollingshead's Banana Nut Bread
Ã¯Â¿Â½ lb creamed butter or Oleo (margarine)
1 cup sugar (Ã¯Â¿Â½ brown & Ã¯Â¿Â½ white)
4 dead ripe bananas, smashed (use a potato masher)
2 Ã¯Â¿Â½ cups flour
1 tsp soda
1 tsp banana extract (vanilla can be used, but banana tastes better)
1 cup broken walnuts
Mix Oleo, sugar, eggs and bananas. Add the dry ingredients and mix well. Add nuts. Put in 2 well greased and floured loaf pans. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Insert toothpick in the middle and when it comes out clean the loaves are done.
