|Carbon tracksters will compete at home again this weekend.|
The Carbon track team went to Delta for a meet on March 21. Several members of the team had success in their events.
Elizabeth Smith took third in the 800 meter and sixth in the 1600 meter events. Amie Stewart was able to place second in long jump, second in the 100 meter hurdles, and third in the 300 meter hurdles.
Kyle Leonard took first in the long jump for the boys. Paul Goodrich finished third in both the mile run and the 800 meter event. Goodrich did not compete in the 3200 meter event because Coach Elias Perez was concerned that because the event was moved to the early portion on the meet and his athletes were not warmed up enough to avoid injury. But based on the final time in the event, Perez predicted that Goodrich would probably have taken first.
Carbon returned to Delta for an invitational meet on April 1. They took a small squad to the meet as many members had obligations that prevented them from traveling on Saturday. Overall 14 teams participated in the meet and most events had 40 students competing.
Elizabeth Smith ran a personal best and finished fourth in the 800 meter run. She took eighth in the two mile run as well. Samantha Smith, competing as a ninth grader, ran the mile and finished a respectable ninth place. It was her first time competing at that distance. She normally competes as a sprinter. Stewart placed fifth in the long jump.
James McKendrick had a shotput throw that placed him in the top three finishers. Unfortunately he stepped over the line on his throw and was disqualified.
This Saturday the team will compete at home as they host an invitational meet. Field events start at 9 a.m. and running events commence at 9:30 a.m.
