Carbon High girls' basketball coach steps down

By TERRY WILLIS
Sun Advocate sports reporter

Bruce Bean announced that he is resigning as the head basketball coach for the Carbon High girls' basketball team.

Bean has been working on a graduate degree and because of the high demands of the course work involved, Bean would not be able to give the team 100 percent next year.

With his son involved in sports, he wants time to watch his games. He also feels that his family needs to have more of his limited attention as well.

He feels that something had to give and his choice was to turn the coaching duties to someone else.

Bean has taken the girls' basketball program to what many call great heights during his tenure as a basketball coach. The Carbon girls' basketball team has a 134-50 win-loss record under Bean's tenure as head coach.

He has been the head coach since the 1998-99 season. Before that he was assistant coach under Don Gressman.

The team has qualified for the state tournament every year that Bean has been at the helm.

In addition to the 2005 state championship, the team has had two third-place finishes, a fourth, and last year's surprising fifth place finish.

Coach Bean stated that this has not been an easy decision to make, but he had to put his priorities in order.

Bean will continue to coach the volleyball squad and remain as assistant coach to the boys baseball team.
