Lady Dinos advance past Bulldogs in playoffs

Sun Advocate sports reporter

Senior Tabby Cummins hits a jumper as the Lady Dinos defeat Judge Memorial in the first round of their play off game.

Flush off their victory down in Emery County, the Lady Dinos were not going to let their momentum slip away. Coach Bruce Bean was nervous about his team as they went into the first round of the playoffs.

Carbon had earned the home court advantage and it proved to be worth it in a 45-38 win over Judge Memorial on Friday.

Judge took control of the ball at the tip-off, but was unable to convert it into any points.

Tabby Cummins took the ball down court and hit the only three point shot that Carbon made for the night. That shot seemed to energize the squad and they hustled their way to an eight point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Dinos' defense was smothering as they held Judge to only six points.

Both teams' defense continued to play hard in the second quarter of play as the scoring slowed down. The Lady Dinos still had a six point lead going into the break.

Since all the marbles were on the table and the loser would be done for the season, play was physical and intense. Judge stayed in the game by hitting at the line. Both teams racked up the fouls as the contact continued.

Carbon regained the eight-point edge as the third period of play wrapped up. The fourth quarter was anybody's game as Judge pounded back in the game.

The Dinos got cold and the lead slipped to three points late in the game. Judge had their full-court press going and Carbon was unable to move the ball onto their side of the court.

In the final minutes, Tabby Cummins found a wide open Danielle Martino for an easy layup. A couple of freethrows gave Carbon the breathing space they needed.

A freshman, Julia Potts, came off the bench to lead in scoring with 14 points.

Both teams ran into foul trouble at the end of the game. Three players from each team, a total of six, ended up out of the game before its conclusion.

The Lady Dinos, now 13-9, travels to Ogden's Dee Events Center for their next matchup. They meet with Canyon View High School (21-1) on Thursday with a 4:10 p.m. tipoff.
