Carbon completes regular season, heads to state

By RICHARD SHAW
Sun Advocate general manager

A Carbon grappler takes down an opponent from Emery during the Region 8 meet in Delta last week.

While not one Carbon wrestler took first place at the region meet last weekend, Carbon is taking more people to the state tournament, which begins today (Thursday), than they ever have before.

"We have some good wrestlers, and we placed a lot of our kids," said coach Dave Smith on Wednesday. "We are young and none are outstanding; yet. But we are taking 14 people to state and that is more than I think the school has ever taken there."

While no one took first at region, Smith saw some outstanding performances from a couple of the kids.

Jay Workman and Tanner Herrick both lost in their weights championship rounds by one point.

"Our junior varsity squad has been very strong this year," said Smith. "Many of them have out done the varsity in a number of meets. All I can say is that we are very pleased to take so many young men to the state. We didn't get the highest seeds, but we will see how we do."

The meet will go from today until Saturday when the champions are crowed. It is being held at Utah Valley State College in the McKay Events Center.
