|Carbon's Parker Parsons (35) and Schyler Namanny (5) struggle to keep the ball out of Emery hands.|
For a team that got no respect early in the season, the Carbon Dinos are making people sit up and take notice as they continue to roll through region play.
The team began the week taking on North Sanpete at home. Even though the Hawks are one of the weaker teams in the region, they are as capable of winning as almost any team is on a given night.. So the Dinos kept their focus and showed that they did not take the game lightly by taking the contest 47-33.
The Dinos jumped out to an early lead and kept building on it throughout the night. Coach Ted Bianco felt that despite taking the lead soon after the start of the game his team played a bit sluggish in the early going.
Schyler Namanny and Chase Julian combined to score 22 points to lead the way. The game had only one three point goal and that was scored by Namanny.
Satisfied with another game in the win column, Carbon had to turn its sights to face a strong Emery High Team.
The Spartans dominated Carbon last season, but this year Carbon was determined to rewrite the story.
The Dinos came out of the gate ready to play. They attacked the Spartans to take a six point lead in the first quarter.
They traded points in the second quarter but improved their lead to seven points by the half.
Bianco fired up his team in the locker room and they came out for the third quarter a blaze. They scored 20 points while holding Emery to 14 which padded the lead for the Dinos. By the end of the third quarter, Carbon led 50-37.
Frustration set in by the fourth quarter and a lot of points were put on the board at the free throw line. The Dino defense was superb and held the Emery Spartans to 67 points.
Jordan Moynier was on a roll, during one stretch he was nine for nine from the floor. He went on to score 23 points and pulled in 18 rebounds. Chase Julian again stepped up and added 22 points, including three buckets from downtown. Schyler Namanny was the third player for Carbon in double figures with 14 including two from beyond the arc. Brandon Wilson added a three.
It was an important game: halfway through the season, and the fact that they defeated a nemisis that had not lost to Carbon in many years made it all the better.
Carbon is in first place in Region 8 play. This is the first time in most peoples memory that Carbon has gone 5-0 in region play.
They are also now ranked 4th overall in the 3A classification, something no one can remember happening ever before.
Bianco stated that the ranking means that now the other teams will take notice and be ready for the Dinos as they enter the second half of region play.
Emery will also have it sights on the end of regular season game against the Dinos on Feb. 10.
Carbon will play at Granite on Friday. They will then return home for a Feb. 1 against Delta.
That game will be at 7 p.m. at the Dino Gym.
