Wendover rolls over East Carbon five

Sports editor

An East Carbon player heads to the basket during the game with Wendover.

For some people Wendover means gambling.

For the East Carbon Vikings this past week it meant rolling the dice against a team they haven't beaten in quite a while. But alas, the roll came up short and the Vikings lost 85-49 in their own gym.

For East Carbon though, the night didn't begin that badly. In the first quarter the ECH kids kept their cool and held right int there with the 7-7 Wildcats. At the end of the first quarter the score was only 20-16 in favor of Wendover.

In the second period things started to slip a little on the offensive end of the court as the Wildcats took a 38-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

What Wendovers coach told his team during those few minutes is hard to know, but whatever it was they came out bombing and shooting, and by the time the third period had ended it was a lucky thing there were any lights left in the Viking Gym. Wendover had put through 28 points in the period and held East Carbon to only 9. That period devastated the Vikings and even though they recovered a little in the final period, it was pretty much over at the end of the third.

Wendover scored 19 in the fourth period to finish out the game while East Carbon was able to put 12 more points on the board.

The leading scorer for East Carbon was Kyle Leonard with 18 points. Larry Leyba wasn't far behind with 17.

Others in the scoring column for East Carbon were Steven Brown with 6, J.D. Leonard with 4, Jacob Perry with 2 and Robert Lowe and Chirs Candelaria with 1 point each.

Wendover shot seven three point bombs while East Carbon managed three, one from Kyle Leonard and two from Leyba.

The Vikings are now 0-5 in Region 18 play with half the season completed.

Their next game is against Wasatch Academy in Sanpete County on Feb. 7. The next home game isn't until Feb. 23. That will also be the final home game for the team.
