Eagles win close one in first league game
It's been some time since the College of Eastern Utah mens team had a big time winning record for a season. But this could be the year as they plowed through the pre-season with an 8-2 record and then took control of their first league game this season and won it 65-63 over the Dixie Rebels.
It wasn't like the team from St. George were pushovers either. They played hard enough to justify the 9-1 record they came into the BDAC with, but the home team, the truly Golden Eagles, held off their opponents and won a close one, something they haven't done well in the past few years.
Where CEU hurt the Rebels was in the first half with good defense and scrappy play. They held Dixie to only 24 first half points, while scoring 33 themselves.
The second half was more a Dixie game as they came back putting in 39 points to CEU's 32, but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead the CEU men had built in the first period.
The Eagles had three players in double figures in the game with Eldridge Henderson leading the way with 18. John Rogers and Tate Sorenson each had 10 points in the contest.
Now the Eagles travel to Snow College on Thursday and then on Saturday the team comes back home for a game with Salt Lake Community College.
If they win those games they could go to 11-2, the best beginning record in years, and with that they would also have a piece of the conference lead, a place they would like to be.
Lady Rebels take win in BDAC
There was a change in the schedule and this was a game that was moved from Friday night to Thursday.
But the change did the Lady Eagles little good as the Dixie Rebels whipped them 80-67 in both teams first league game of the young season.
The 8-2 Lady Rebels came into town flying pretty high after a strong preseason schedule and a pretty glossy record. The 2-6 CEU women were hoping that their preseason record didn't mean anything about how they could perform against some of the Scenic West Athletic Conference's top teams.
But hopes and dreams were dashed from the beginning of the game as Dixie took off from the beginning of the game. In the first half the team from St. George shot almost 61 percent and it only went up in the second period as they put through 63 percent of their shots.
Meanwhile the Lady Eagles were having a hard time finding the hole in the middle of the rim. They only shot 34 percent in the first half and then improved that slightly in the second with almost 41 percent shooting.
CEU's top scorers were Veva Whitear with 20 points and Janeen Nelson with 12. Megan Hunsaker led the Lady Eagles in rebounds with 6 while Nelson had 5.
The team will now travel to Snow College in Ephraim on Thursday to play another conference game. The Lady Badgers have a 5-5 record with one league loss so far this season.
On Saturday, Salt Lake Community College comes to Price to play with an overall 8-2 record and a history of beating up on the Lady Eagles each year, even on their home court.
