|The swimming season for high school competition may be young, but Carbon High swimmers have already competed in several meets.|
For most people it would seem swimming was the sport of summer.
But for high school athletes, the late fall and the dead of winter is when they compete in competition and Carbon High School is right in the middle of that fray.
Starting in late October, the team traveled to meets across the state.
The first meet the team competed at was the Cedar City Invitational on Oct.29-30. At that meet ,were 10 teams from the 3A and 4A classifications. Carbon's boy team took seventh place and the girls took eighth.
In individual events at the meet, Chase Norton took second in the 50 freestyle and Regina Tetreault took third in the 100 butterfly.
Carbon also did well in the 400 yard Freestyle relay where they took fifth. That team consisted of Norton, Dan Gibson, Leo Yu and Bradlee Leonard.
Then on Nov. 5 the team met 2A's Richfield at the Price pool. The boys won edging out Richfield 135 to 132. The girls also won 135-129.
In individual competition Tretreault took first in the 200 individual medley, Trisha Erickson took first in the 50 freestyle, and Kelsey Gillespie took first in the 100 freestyle.
Others on the womens team that did well were Erika Flower who took second in the 200 freestyle. Ali Baum, second in the 50 freestyle, and Bonnie Peterson who took second in the 100 breaststroke.
The women's 400 yard relay was won by the team of Tetreault, Erickson, Flower and Rikki Birch.
In the boys competition Norton won the 50 freestyle, with Leonard taking the 500 freestyle and Chris Eikenbary taking the 100 breaststroke. Yu took second in the 100 backstroke.
The boys relay teams also did very well. In the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays, Eikenbary, Yu, Leonard and Norton took first.
The team then traveled to Lehi for a competition with the Pioneers. Lehi won the meet in both the boys and girls categories, defeating the Dinos 195 to 169, and the Lady Dinos 249 to 104. In that meet Lehi was able to place 50 swimmers in the pool to the 23 Carbon brought to the meet.
Top performers for the boys team at this dual meet were Eikenbary with a first in the 200 individual medley and first in the 100 breaststroke; Norton with firsts in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Leonard with a second in the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle; Yu with seconds in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke; and Gibson who took second in the 100 freestyle.
The boys team also took first place in the 400 freestyle relay. The team included Eikenbary, Gibson, Leonard and Norton.
On the girls team, Tetreault took first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 400 freestyle relay. That team consisted of Tetreault, Baum, Flower and Kelsey Gillespie.
