Carbon hosts defending 4A state champs Springville

A Springville line-drive sails just out of reach of Carbon shortstop Chase Julian. Three first inning runs on errors cost the Dinos and the defending 4A state champions took the game, 4-0.

Three runs in the top of the first inning of Monday's baseball game at Carbon field lead the Dinos to a season-opening loss.

Errors and walks kept Springville runners on the bases and Carbon struggled to make a play to close the inning.

Even though Dino errors ceased after the first and the team only allowed one more run in the seventh, Springville, the defending 4A state champion, took the game 4-0.

According to head coach Lane Herrick, rather than having pregame batting practice and warmups, the team spent two hours before the game cleaning up the mud on the field.

Monday's warm weather failed to evaporate the pools of water that surrounded the diamond.

Herrick said despite the loss, the team defense was much stronger after the first and pitching looked promising with Mike Smith on the mound.

He also expects the batting to improve as the season progresses.

"Give us some time and our hitting will come around," he concluded.
