Joe Andrade's comments in letters to the editor on page 8A of the Sun Advocate of March 11, 2014, are directed toward getting our elected officials working to "facilitate... transition from a coal-dominated, extractive economy towards a sustainable economy."
He is proposing that we should move away from our position as the best managed state in the country to be more like California with its power position favoring wind, solar, geothermal, and other higher cost sources of energy.
California is `bankrupt' in its economy and stock of good sense. Our power costs would nearly triple if we follow his recommendations. I personally prefer our position of responsible development of energy in our resource rich environment here in southeast Utah.
Joe is rabid in his position of reducing our production of C02, and is a strong believer in anthropogenic Global Warming (human caused - mankind's industrial and energy production businesses cause the problem).
The Supreme Court jumped on board with former Vice President, Al Gore, to demand that we reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They left the door open when they said that we must reduce those gases if harm is shown to be happening.
Carbon dioxide is the gas that the `environmental activists' are targeting. It would be strange to hear on the evening weather report that the night will be warmer than the expected average because there was a bit more Carbon dioxide in the air. Water vapor and cloud cover are much more effective than Carbon dioxide at controlling changes in the weather.
We have about 350 parts per million of C02 in the air around us. Animals (humans included) use Oxygen for our metabolism and body functions. Oxygen is found in concentrations of 210,000 parts per million. C02 is very scarce in comparison - much less than one percent of the atmosphere - Thirty five hundredths of one percent is the amount.
The plants of the world, from Algae to Redwood trees, use C02 for their metabolism and they are often Carbon dioxide starved. More of the scarce gas would actually benefit plant growth.
We hear a lot of nonsense scare tactics that the sea level will raise and kill millions of people and drown our coastal cities because global warming will cause the Arctic ice cap to melt.
Not so, the ice is floating, and would stay the same as far as sea level is concerned.
Another claim is that the coral reefs are being destroyed by ocean waters absorbing more C02 and becoming acidic. That is another unproven ludicrous claim. There are many other factors to consider.
A judgment by the federal government has claimed that 5000 parts per million of C02 does no harm to our health.
The war against Carbon dioxide is bad for our economy, and bad for the health and natural balances of nature.
