By a vote of 6-4, the East Carbon-Sunnyside City Council passed a motion Tuesday night to change the town's name to East Carbon with the subdivisions of Sunnyside, Dragerton and Columbia.

From the beginning of the city's regularly scheduled meeting, resident after resident approached the council mostly voicing the opinion that East Carbon needed to keep its name.

After those in attendance had been allowed to speak, the vote was motioned for by council member Barbara Robinett and seconded by council member Karla Young.

The new title will essentially make it so that the entire area of the new city will be called East Carbon. Sunnyside will keep its name as a subdivision and Columbia will do the same.

The area of the town which was known as East Carbon will now be called Dragerton.

While the motion passed, East Carbon City Attorney Jeremy Humes clarified that the city's council will have to make the change official by passing a resolution or ordinance at their next session.

See Thursday's Sun Advocate for a full account of the council's decision.
