The Carbon School District and Helper Junior High honored the Helper Police Force and Helper Rescue 3 at their Oct. 7 meeting for working together to save the life of a Helper Student.

According to Helper Principal Mika Salas, earlier this year a student developed a life threatening health issue while attending class.

As soon as the incident occurred, Salas, coach Phil Howa and secretary Joyce Branson took charge of the situation and were able to open the student's airway while waiting to for public safety personnel to arrive.

"As we got CPR started, Police Detective Steve Boyer arrived, said Salas. "I don't know how he was able to get there so fast, but he was on scene in less than one minute."

Helper Rescue 3 arrived next, stabilizing the student for transport and taking over medical care.

"These guys are mostly volunteer and their commitment is extraordinary," Salas said.

The young patient, whose name, age and gender were not released, was transported to Castle view Hospital and treated for an undisclosed medical condition.

"With the broken roads, I have no idea how these guys got to the school so quickly," said Salas. "I can tell you though that we have a healthy, vibrant student who is still with us because of their actions."
