Scartezina nursing lab dedicated at USU Eastern

The ribbon is cut at the McDonald Career Center for the new Emma Gunderson Scartezina nursing lab that will used to train student nurses. The family did the honors on September 6.

Dan Scartezina spoke at length about his mother and the meaning of the event and the center to his family. He talked at length about his mother and what she faced as a nurse when she graduated from the W.H. Groves LDS School of Nursing in the 1930s. At that time nursing was very regimented, with certain attitudes and proper attire being very important. He said he remembered the cloak, hat and uniform his mother always had hanging in the closet when he saw a recent display at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake. Emma Gunderson Scartezina was a nurse at the Carbon Hospital and later the Director of Nursing and then she became a public health nurse. She served in that capacity for 20 years and was well regarded throughout the community.
