Rural Utah businesses are finding it a little easier to add employees thanks to a hiring incentive from the Department of Workforce Services.
The Small Business Bridge Grant Program reimburses small businesses for some of the costs of hiring and training someone new-costs that are often a barrier to hiring new employees. The grant provides incentives of $3,000 to $4,000 per new hire, with an additional $500 incentive if the business hires someone receiving Unemployment Insurance. A company is only eligible to receive the money after it fills the position. Starting Sept. 3, the Bridge Program will also provide an additional $2,000 incentive if the business hires a veteran.
"This grant couldn't have come at a better time," said Danielle Howa-Pedergrass with Eastern Utah Women's Healthcare. "My business was at the 'make it or break it' point and I needed to hire experienced staff to help me succeed. By offsetting the cost of hiring and training, I was able to hire three knowledgeable employees and my business is now thriving."
In order to qualify for the grant, businesses must employ between two and 100 people, and the position must pay at least 80% of the county's average wage.
