Although the vendors and musicians won't occupy Main Street until Aug. 16-18, Helper's annual Arts and Music Festival is already beginning to involve young artists.

Volunteer professional artists are working with kids at area elementary schools to get them interested in art and in the festival, Kristen Taylor told the city council last week. Taylor and David Johnson are co-chairing the festival this year.

Another way the show is getting a head start is by having a traveling exhibit begin on the First Friday of August, Johnson said. Helper's Civic Auditorium will host the display of 30 panels created by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, spouse of world-famous Diego Rivera.

Johnson also said works sponsored by the Depression-Era Works Progress Administration will be exhibited during the festival.

Ruth Metzger requested and received permission from the council to hold a burnout competition on Main Street just north of Poplar Street. The burnout was near the Helper Park last year.

She said she has contacted neighbors and they had no objection. The county will install and remove the concrete barricades, Metzger added.
