'we're outnumbered'

"We're outnumbered, and that's a good thing," Helper Junior High School Principal Tom Montoya tells the concert audience Wednesday afternoon in the school gym. He had asked listeners to note that members of the band on stage and the two choirs seated in the balcony were more numerous than those who were listening. "That's a good thing because it means the arts are alive at Helper Junior High," he declares. Lining the sides of the gym were samples of student art - sculpture, paintings, drawings and ceramics. It was the teenage version of the annual Helper Arts and Music Festival.
