Two women who are working to improve their lives and the community were awarded $500 scholarships by Soroptimist International of Price on April 17.
Colette Marx of Price was chosen from a number of candidates to receive the Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Awards Scholarship. The Women's Opportunity Program is a cornerstone of Soroptimist of the America's Organization to honor women who are heads of households and working to better their lives and that of their families through continuing education.
Marx has returned to school for a degree in accounting. Her husband Mike was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and she has had to step up to be the breadwinner. The family has four school age boys.
Her application was sent on to the Soroptimist Rocky Mountain Region and she was awarded $1,500 in scholarship money.
Marx took part in Phi Beta Lambda Leadership competition recently in Cedar City and won first a first in accounting principles and a first in business communications. Marx qualified to compete at the National PBL Competition in Anaheim, Calif., this summer.
The other scholarship awarded on Wednesday night was for the Violet Richardson honor. This recognizes the volunteer work in the community by a young women who is 14-17 years old. Again there were many good candidates for the club to chose from.
Grand County High School student Sarah Stalpes was the recipient, based on her extensive volunteerism in the grand county area. She has helped establish Anti-bullying presentations, is on the Grand County Library Board, is instrumental in recycling efforts among many other things. Staples was given the chance to apply for the scholarship through her participation on the USU Eastern Upward Bound Program.
She is going to participate as a sterling scholar next year. She plans on going to either U of U or USU. Her life goal is to become a physician specializing in pediatrics.
