Trees full of garbage disposals

Evylen MacLean and other bird watchers in southeast Price counted 42 big, black birds perched in two cottonwood trees Wednesday morning. It turns out they were turkey vultures, Nature's cleaning systems. By eating dead animals, they keep the landscape clean of rotting matter. Their scientific name is Cathartes aura, and cathartes is Latin for 'purifier.'
