Carbon High golfer Hailey Kirkwood tees off on the second hole during a home match on Thursday afternoon at the Carbon Country Club.
With a home meet early in the season, the Carbon High girls golf team was looking to make a statement as a team to be reckoned with in Region 12 competition.
But cold and windy weather conditions put a damper on things as teams, including Carbon High, struggled to play through the elements.
Carbon High head coach Kenji said the Lady Dinos finished in third place with 105 points total behind first place Delta with 112 points and second place Spanish Fork with 109 points.
"Overall we did okay," said Otani. "We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to win the match because it was our only home match of the season."
Hailey Kirkwood, a junior, led the Lady Dinos with 31 points on the day. Junior Katie Felice had 29 points and sophomores Braxton Gibson and Kaycee Gilson added 23 and 22 points respectively.
Otani said the experience of playing in tough weather conditions should help the team as the season progresses. The team will travel to Delta on April 4 for a three school cup involving Delta, Vernal and Carbon High.
"The girls gave everything they had at the match," he said. "It was a good experience for them to learn to handle pressure and expectations they want to accomplish this season."
