A fairly close place for people to explore and recreate in near to Carbon County is the San Rafael Swell. Here the San Rafael Reef pokes out of the eastern part of the Swell.
The eastern Utah area is ripe with places to go for short day trips, places to camp or even places to go and stay in motels and just explore by car.
The San Rafael Swell poses a lot of different views for a lot of different people. Places like Buckhorn Wash, the Wedge, Reds Canyon, the Sinbad Area, the Reef and the Moroni Slopes provide a variety of opportunities. In these areas there are some improved campgrounds and many places that have dispersed camping as well. Most trips can be done in one day from Price. There are also places to stay along Highway 10 in the Emery County communities and in Green River.
Also at the south end of the Swell is Goblin Valley State Park, where hoodoos haunt even the most practical of people.
Near to Goblin Valley is Capitol Reef National Park. While not having roads that are totally paved, most roads accomodate cars.
And of course there is always Moab, with two national parks, a state park and just lots of great scenery. Of course spring break is a time when that town really gets busy.
Of course there are things right in the Castle Valley as well including the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum in Price, the Western Mining Museum in Helper, the Pioneer Museum and the Musuem of the San Rafael in Castle Dale.
