Late run pushes Bear River past Lady Dinos 56-48 in 3A consolation bracket

Sun Advocate sports reporter

After numerous ties and lead changes through the first three quarters, a 9-1 Bear River run midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Lady Dinos were eliminated from the 3A basketball tournament with a 56-48 loss on Friday morning at the Dee Events Center in Ogden.

While the Carbon offense struggled mightily on offense in a loss to Dixie the night before, the Lady Dinos came out and were able to string together a few baskets to get on the board early. With the game tied and the clock running down, Carbon's Katie Basinger threw a desperation 3-point shot from near half court that went in as the buzzer sounded giving the Lady Dinos a 9-6 lead.

Over the next two quarters the two teams continued to trade baskets with neither one able to pull away. Carbon led 22-21 at halftime and took a two point lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Carbon's offense struggled to connect on shots while the Bear River offense began driving to the basket making close jumpers and connecting on free throw attempts. The Lady Bears quickly took back the lead pushing their lead to 42-38. Basinger hit a 3-pointer for the Lady Dinos cutting the lead to one but Bear River followed with a 9-1 run to build their lead to 49-41.

After a Jordan Scoggins basket and a free throw from Shelby Cornforth, Carbon cut the deficit to 49-44 with a minute left. But they would get no closer as Bear River hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final moments to secure the win.

The game featured a total of 13 lead changes and 10 ties over the 32 minutes of play.

Shelby Cornforth and Taylor Oliver led the Lady Dinos with eight points. Oliver, who went a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line, was one part of the Carbon bench that combined for 19 points in the game. Giovanna Chiara finished with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds and Basinger added six points and three assists.

In her final game for Carbon, Ashley Quinton, the team's only senior, finished with five points and seven rebounds.

With the loss, Carbon finished the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 16-8 and an 8-2 record in Region 12 play.
