Cheaper dirt may cut cost at Helper ballpark

Helper American Legion Baseball coach Jeff Cisneros thinks he may have found a way to cut the cost of finishing the ballpark's improvement in half.

Cisneros told the city council at its February meeting that the city would be able to buy reject dirt from Nielson Construction for just $7 per ton, as opposed to the $50 per ton that imported red dirt costs.

The plan would be to use the cheap stuff for the bottom inch or inch-and-a-half of the infield and to finish off the top with the more expensive and colorful red dirt.
