With the seconds ticking off the clock and a chance to advance to the 3A quarterfinals on the line, Shelby Cornforth found herself in a familiar spot with the ball in her hands.

The Carbon High center got the ball with eight seconds left and hit a hook shot in the paint that bounced around the rim before falling in helping the Lady Dinos to scratch out a 35-33 win over a pesky Stansbury team on Saturday night..

It all happened so fast, Cornforth and other teammates were still in amazement with the result.

"It just went in," said Cornforth after the game. "As soon it went through the basket I heard the crowd cheer really loud."

"It was win or go to overtime," said CHS head coach Ted Bianco. "Shelby hit the hook shot for us and it was big for her to do that despite struggling in the game."

Stansbury proved to be a difficult matchup for the Lady Dinos as both teams struggled to get things going on offense through much of the first half. Stansbury took an early lead and held onto it taking an 18-17 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Dinos began making shots with Giovanna Chiara and Shailee Croasmun leading an 8-0 run helping get their largest lead of the game at 25-18.

Stansbury continued to stay in the game adding their own 6-0 run late in the third quarter helping to cut the deficit to 27-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

Carbon High's Katie Basinger stole the ball and got a fast break basket to extend the lead back to seven points.

After Stansbury tied the game at 31-31, Chiara got a rebound off a missed Carbon shot and put it back up for a basket giving the Lady Dinos a 33-31 lead with 3:13 left.

"Giovanna is a workhorse for us on the boards and getting those key putbacks on misses," Bianco said.

Cornforth missed two free throws that could have extended the lead and Stansbury's Kallie Stewart capitalized by hitting two free throws to tie the game at 33-33 with 2:25 left.

Both teams were unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities as they combined to go scoreless over the next 2:20.

While Cornforth had struggled early in the game, Chiara said she knew the ball was in the right hands in the end.

"Shelby pulled through for us and made the big shot," Chiara said.

Chiara led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Dinos with a team-high 10 points. Cornforth added eight points, Croasmun had seven, Basinger finished with six and Jordan Scoggins chipped in four points.

The Lady Dinos (16-6, 8-2 Region 12) will take on Dixie High (15-7, 7-3 Region 9) on Thursday at 5:50 p.m. at Weber State University. Dixie upset #1 seed Juan Diego 51-39 earlier on Saturday.

Bianco said the team will to continue to work on improving a defense that is ranked second in class 3A and will be a key for the Lady Dinos heading into the quarterfinals.

"Everything's on the line now. It's win or go home," Bianco said.
