Carbon High's Shailee Croasmun and the rest of the Lady Dinos clamped down on defense against Delta down the stretch to get a 46-41 win.
Down by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Carbon High Lady Dinos needed every minute of the 32 minute contest with North Sanpete before coming away with a 46-41 win on Tuesday night at home.
The win sets up a showdown with Delta on Thursday for a shot at claiming a co-Region 12 championship. If the Lady Dinos travel to Delta and defeat them to tie for first place in Region 12, a coin flip would then be held to determine who gets the number one seed from Region 12 in the 3A State Tournament.
A slow start saw the Lady Dinos trail 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. But the team answered in the second quarter with an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game before going into the half trailing 22-20.
The Lady Dinos grabbed a 35-34 lead midway through the fourth quarter and never relinquished the lead for the rest of the way.
North Sanpete cut the lead down to 42-41 off a steal and a layup. But Carbon High sophomore Katie Basinger hit two free throws and stole the ball from North Sanpete on the following possession to stop their momentum. Shelby Cornforth and Taylor Oliver each added a free throw in the final moments to help seal the win for the Lady Dinos.
Carbon High head coach Ted Bianco said once the Lady Dinos stopped turning the ball over things began to go their way.
"We responded in the second quarter with that big run to take the lead and we did a good job stopping North Sanpete on defense," Bianco said.
Cornforth led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Shailee Croasmun and Basinger each added 9 points, Giovanna Chiara had 8 points and Ashley Quinton, the team's only senior, finished with 7 points in her final home game at Carbon High.
Now with a final shot at a co-region championship, the Carbon High players know what is at stake in the season finale on Thursday night.
"If we want to get that trophy, we are going to need to play really hard to get a win against Delta," said Croasmun.
