In the battle of unbeaten Region 12 teams, Lady Rabbits' big first half proves to be too much for Lady Dinos in 50-41 loss

With sole possession of first place in Region 12 on the line, the Carbon High Lady Dinos fell behind in the first half and were unable to mount a comeback as they fell to Delta 50-41 at home on Tuesday night.

Behind hot shooting performances from TaNeil Clayton and Angela Burton who combined for 32 points, Delta used a 22-11 second quarter to take 13-point lead into halftime.

The Lady Rabbits used that large lead to keep the Lady Dinos at bay, not allowing them to get any closer than seven points through the second half.

"Our goal going into the game was to try and shut their shooters down, but that was a hard goal to accomplish tonight," said Carbon High head coach Ted Bianco after the game. "They have a group of kids that can flat out shoot the ball."

Carbon trailed Delta 39-30 going into the fourth quarter. The team gathered a little momentum midway through the quarter but their luck took a turn in the opposite direction. Bianco was called for a technical foul with 3:44 left to play after he kicked the basketball back on to the court.

Delta made one of the technical free throws and added a basket on the following possession to increase their lead to 47-35 with 3:10 left.

Carbon went on a 6-1 run over the next 1:50 cutting the deficit to 48-41 on a turnaround jumper by Shelby Cornforth.

But Delta (9-5, 5-0 Region 12) took plenty of time off the clock by passing the ball before Carbon was forced to start fouling. Delta's Clayton made two free throws with 53 seconds left that helped secure the 50-41 victory.

Bianco said his team did not play well in the first half and each time they seemed poised to make a run, Delta would answer with a big bucket.

"Good teams can answer with big buckets. Delta is very athletic and they are a tough team to play," Bianco explained.

Cornforth led the Lady Dinos with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Shailee Croasmun added 6 points and a team-high 5 steals.

Bianco said he was encouraged by the fact that Carbon was able to hit some outside shots from players such as Jordan Scoggins, Taylor Oliver and Katie Basinger. If the Lady Dinos are able to hit more outside shots as the season progresses, that will help in getting opposing teams to focus on more than just trying to stop Carbon's inside game with Cornforth, Giovanna Chiara and others.

The Lady Dinos (11-5, 4-1 Region 12) will look to bounce back from the loss as they will travel to Payson on Friday for a game starting at 5:15 p.m.
