Sophomore Dytanya Johnson finished with a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the Golden Eagles' 65-62 overtime road victory over Colorado Northwestern CC on Saturday.
The USU Eastern Men's and Women's Basketball wanted to open the new year on a positive note and they accomplished just that as the two teams went on the road and swept Colorado Northwestern CC on Saturday afternoon.
The men's team (12-6, 2-1 SWAC) needed overtime before pulling out the 65-62 win while the the women's team (4-12, 1-2 SWAC) was able to get past CNCC with a 62-53 victory.
Men's head coach Adjalma Becheli said his team opened the game against CNCC on a cold streak and trailed 33-30 at the half. The team played much better in the second half as sophomores Miles Gatewood and Dytanya Johnson combined to score 32 points helping the Golden Eagles get even before pulling away in the extra session for the victory.
"We may have underestimated Colorado Northwestern and they played one of their best games of the season," Becheli said. "I liked the way we played in the second half and in overtime to get the win. Overall we played horrible, but we were still able to get the win."
Now the focus of the USU Eastern teams will turn as they return home to host Salt Lake Community College and and Snow College on Thursday and Saturday. The Thursday games start at 5:30 p.m. and the Saturday games start at 3 p.m.
