One night they might be cold and the next night they might be hot. For the Dinos, the start of games have proven to be an interesting mixture of both kinds of starts.

At first it looked like the Dinos might get a blowout win after starting their game against Grand on Friday night with a 20-6 run in the first quarter.

But Grand battled back in the second quarter cutting the Dinos lead to 29-24 at halftime.

In the second half the Dinos rode the hot hand of senior Jordan Blanc who scored a season-high 33 points as the Dinos pulled away from Grand for the 65-47 victory.

From the opening tip to the end of the first quarter, the Dinos could almost do no wrong.

The Dinos worked the ball down in the paint on offense with Blanc and Derek Young helping get an early advantage on points in the paint and with rebounds.

On the defensive side the Dinos played a smothering defense that picked up a number of loose balls, long rebounds and stole the ball on a number of possessions.

But in the second quarter the tide began to turn as the Dinos' fast start was stopped in a hurry by Grand. Shots that were falling in the first quarter suddenly weren't finding the bottom of the basket and the fast break opportunities were shut down. Grand outscored the Dinos 18-9 cutting the Dinos' lead at the half to just five points.

Grand cut the lead to 31-29 early in the third quarter before the Dinos started to pull away as Young scored five straight points to push the lead to 36-29. Moments later Blanc added a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 39-29.

Blanc took over for the Dinos in the fourth quarter as he connected on three 3-pointers and added a few strong drives to the basket that pushed the Dinos' lead to 20 late in the quarter.

"Jordan had plenty of energy tonight and we just rode the horse to victory," said head coach Jeff Cisneros after the game.

Blanc's 33 points and 8 rebounds were crucial for the Dinos as some players including Young and Dakota Cisneros were dealing with illnesses, Cisneros said.

With three capable scorers including Blanc, Young and Cisneros on the team, Cisneros said one player can step up and play big on any given night.

"Jordan's hard to guard against because of his quickness," Cisneros said. "He can make things really hard on defense for other teams."

Young added 11 points for the Dinos. Cisneros and Wyatt Hansen each finished with seven points each.

The Dinos (6-4) will finish a week break before returning back to action on Friday night with a home game against rival Emery High at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High Gymnasium. Carbon High won the previous game on Dec. 14 with a 58-53 victory.
