Gary K. Bowers 1959 - 2012
Our mountain man, Gary K. Bowers, passed away on Nov. 27, 2012, following a valiant fight with cancer.
He was born on April 28, 1959, to Harvey L. and Peggy Barney Bowers in Provo. In many ways Gary was born in the wrong century. He really probably would have much preferred living in frontier times making a living as a trapper and mountain man.
During his childhood he likely helped to keep Bob's Army and Navy store in Orem profitable throughout the late 1960's and early 1970's through BB and pellet sales alone.
In 1978 he married Sherry Nielsen, of Trenton, and together they had two beautiful daughters. They later divorced. Early in his life he worked for Wurlitzer's in Cache Valley but throughout most of his life Gary made his living as an auto body repairman. He likely got his start in that occupation when he used his natural artistic talents to paint big eagles on any Pontiac Firebird hood he could find in the late 1970's. Throughout his auto body career Gary worked for a variety of shops including Whitlock's Auto Body in Provo and the Chevrolet dealership in Price.
Although Gary was a hard worker, he very much worked for the weekends and was never happier or more filled with life than when he was spending time outdoors. Hunting season in the fall was his favorite time of the year and he spent every moment he possibly could in search of a prize buck. Those who accompanied him sometimes realized that his inner mountain man would leave mere mortals struggling to keep up. Even though Gary wasn't always lucky in love, a little over 10 years ago that luck changed when he met Paula who brought love into his life and was a wonderful, faithful and loving companion to Gary as they made a happy home together in Helper. Gary lived his life very humbly and simply and provided those around him with an endless supply of fun, love and good humor.
Gary is survived by his loving companion, Paula, his daughters: Tina Buttars (Robert), Trenton, and Michelle Jackson (Joshua), Roy. Gary is also survived by his loving mother Peggy Nye, Provo, and four brothers: Reese Bowers (Debbie), Boise, Idaho; Phillip Bowers (Carol), Highland; Perry Bowers (Marian), Spanish Fork; and Barney Nye (Adam), Spanish Fork; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at the Berg Mortuary of Orem, 500 North State Street. Friends may call at the mortuary Sunday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 - 10:50 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
