Smokey end of a day well spent

Fragrant smoke from barbeques fills the air at Dino Mine Park on Saturday as hundreds of volunteers enjoyed a break from a hard day of work around Price and Helper during the annual Day of Caring event put on by the United Way.

They joined together with shovels, hammers, brooms and many other tools in hand spending much of Saturday morning performing work all around the communities of Price and Helper.

And they were all volunteers. All 700 of them.

Last year the event brought out 258 volunteers.

"We were amazed at the amount of people who participated this year compared to years past," said Annalee Howland, an AmeriCorps VISTA member.

The annual Day of Caring event put on by the United Way brought together a number of local groups and members of the community for a day of helping give back to the community. According to Howland, volunteers worked on over 40 projects during the day. Some of the projects included cleaning up Wood Hill, fixing the Habitat for Humanity house, helping harvest the People's Garden, cleaning up the BMX track as well as many others.

Volunteers also completed 22 home projects for residents in the community. Work at these individual homes involved projects like yard work, cutting trees, building fences, putting up sheet rock, painting, and much more. The Juvenile Court youth workers were assigned a home in Carbonville that required five loads of weeds and debris hauled off to the dump.

"Everyone worked so hard to make the life of someone else better, how proud I am to be a part of such a great event," Howland said. "The turnout was so impressive, I feel so lucky to live in this community where people come together and accomplish great things."

Groups who helped provide volunteers included USU Eastern- Sun center, girls and boys basketball teams, Carbon High School - TSL (Today's Service Leaders) Club, Juvenile Court, Helper Stake, OHV Club, Hiker's Club and many more members of the community.

Sponsors who helped make the event possible included Fresh Market, Peterson Chemical, Price City, Helper City, Coke, Walmart, Cold Stone, Sutherlands and Carbon County.
