After being down two sets to nothing and on the edge of losing to their rival, the Emery High Lady Spartans Volleyball team did a complete 180 degree shift taking the last three sets in thrilling fashion handing the Carbon High Lady Dinos a loss in their home opener on Thursday evening.

Despite being down early in the first two sets, Carbon High continued to battle back not allowing Emery High to take the sets. Emery High tied the first set at 23-23 all but Carbon High put away the first set 25-23 thanks to kills from junior Annika Hansen and senior Kayleigh Potts.

The second set continued to see a seesaw battle between the teams, each other getting out to a lead but unable to hold on to it.

Hansen scored a number of points for Carbon High down the stretch using both tip shots and kills to give the Lady Dinos the lead. Carbon High eventually took the set after an Emery High error tied the game and a block by Potts to give Carbon High a 28-26 set win and a 2-0 set lead.

From that point Emery High seemed to up their play by cutting down on errors and getting digs to prevent Carbon from scoring. Emery eventually won the set 23-25 when a shot by Carbon's Hansen hit the net.

The fourth set was more of the same as both teams battled for the lead. Carbon High was unable to convert a number of opportunities down the stretch leaving the door open for Emery High to tie the game at 2-2.

With the momentum shifting to Emery High, the Lady Spartans continued to play in the final set by converting scoring opportunities through kills and tip shots. With the game point on the line, an Emery serve grazed the top of the net before landing just behind the Carbon players securing the comeback win for the Lady Spartans (2-1).

Carbon High head coach Danielle Jensen said she has never seen a game end in such a unique way.

"Of all things to have a game end on a shot like that," Jensen said after the game. "It's hard to lose to Emery at home especially when it ends with a shot like that."

Despite the loss, Jensen said she was pleased with the effort, noting Carbon High came back from deficits in the first two sets to take an early lead in the game.

"We went down fighting instead of giving up," she said. "Emery got the hits down the stretch when they needed them and we didn't."

Carbon High will look put the tough loss behind them as they continue their season on Sept. 13 with a home game against Delta.
