A couple of weeks back, I theorized that we are indeed living under guidance from the worst federal congress to ever grace our nation's capital. In the weeks which have followed, they have done little to change my mind. Remember when I joked that this bunch of lames couldn't even pass the farm bill? Well guess what, they still can't and the issue (which never really has been) is no longer a joke.
In the middle of one of the worst drought years in recent history, the congress decided that a five week hiatus would be a great idea, despite the fact that the American farm belt now resembles the San Rafael Swell. According to much of what I have read this week, a great deal of farmers are now to a point where they are being forced to sell underweight cattle they would have continued to feed.
To most, the sale of some cattle early doesn't seem like that big of a deal but the choices these farmers make will affect the price of meat, produce and fuel for months, maybe years. And when it comes down to it..... they really don't have much choice.
The legislation which could provide a choice, stalemated much like everything else our congress has batted about this year. Feed prices have gone through the roof during this year's summer drought and with a lack of corn crops, ethanol prices most likely will help to increase the cost of gas.
The house did work through $383 million worth of disaster relief at the beginning of August. However, Senate officials went on break before going through the motions of another fake vote. Hey, at least there is no filibuster on the table for this one right? Senate officials had attempted to work out a five year package which could have spelled long term relief earlier in the year but instead the legislation was sidelined because of Republicans balking at the food stamp portion of the bill.
Never, perhaps in the history entire of this country, has a legislative body injured the American people so much for what amounts to blatant and unapologetic political gain. This issue alone has far reaching implications for not only the farm belt but the US economy as a whole and our congress is at total stalemate. Ideas and solutions do not matter. Policy is no longer a matter for debate as these poor fools dance their hour upon the stage or whatever. The whole situation makes me want to turn a blind eye to politics completely. It makes me want to take my toys and go home because after all that's what they have done right? These are our leaders, right?
For the second time in a month I have outlined just how ineffectual this elected body is, but to what end? My own mind keeps going over and over the same thought. How did things get this bad and even more frightening, what's next?
Think about what could happen in the recent future given our government's track record. If Romney wins in November, do Democrats filibuster every single bill that comes their way for the next four years? Would that be fair? Would that be just about even-steven?
Never happens, as they would be shot for treason if they tried to do half of what the current majority body is getting away with in the house.
And what if Obama sees a second term? Do we have more of the same to look forward to? Is that how the American people rate for those elected to serve us? I know it sucks to lose, nobody likes it, but it doesn't mean you blow up the chess board because you got check-mated. The American political landscape is no longer about policy and that is the problem. Two differing political parties can argue and debate an issue until a mutually acceptable compromise is reached. However, when you turn your opponent into a demon and his followers into the anti-christ you make compromise impossible.
Regardless of who wins this coming November, the real issue seems to be in the legislative branch of government and with no super majority likely either another "do-nothing" bunch is on the way. They have found a way to do nothing and still get paid. Not a bad gig, not bad at all.
