Helper uses late inning rally to defeat Utah Perfect Game 8-3 to win home baseball tournament on Sunday

There's no place like home and for the Helper American Legion Baseball team playing close to home could not have gone any better.

After a tough tournament in Idaho last weekend which saw Helper go 0-5 with a number of close losses, the team rebounded with a perfect 4-0 record en route to a tournament championship during the Helper Tournament this weekend.

Teams from around Utah including Utah Perfect Game, Highland, Desert Hills, Kearns, Roosevelt, Cyprus and Price participated in the weekend long tournament.

Helper defeated Highland 13-3 on Friday and followed up on Saturday with two more victories including a 5-2 win over Desert Hills and an 11-6 victory over Kearns to advance to the championship game on Sunday afternoon against Utah Perfect Game.

In the championship game, Helper used a strong pitching performance from Derek Young as he held Perfect Game to no runs through four innings of work.

Utah Perfect Game finally put some runs on the scoreboard as they strung together a number of hits against Young in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Helper immediately bounced back scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to retake the lead at 5-3.

A Utah Perfect Game rally in the sixth inning was quickly quelled when a Perfect Game player overslid the bag at second base and was called out, resulting in a double play for Helper. The manager for Perfect Game was ejected from the game in the top of the sixth inning for arguing with an umpire about the call at second base.

Helper's Jake Nichols, who came in relief of Young, pitched two scoreless innings and added a two-run home run helping the Helper team to clinch the championship with an 8-3 win.
