Three area teachers win Arch Coal 'Golden Apples'

Three Castle Country teachers were among nine in the region presented Golden Apple Achiever awards Thursday by the Arch Coal Foundation, according to Erwin Sass, general manager of the Dugout Canyon Mine.

Area teachers receiving Golden Apple Achiever Awards were: Camille Carlson, Carbon High School; AnnaLee Sorensen, Creekview Elementary; and JanaKae Wall, Huntington Elementary.

The Arch Coal Foundation's teacher recognition program is available to classroom teachers in Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier counties. The counties surround the Skyline, Dugout Canyon and Sufco mines operated by Canyon Fuel Company, a subsidiary of major U.S. coal producer Arch Coal, Inc.

The Golden Apple Achievement Awards are part of the Arch Coal Foundation's Teacher Achievement Award program, in which educators are nominated by members of the public and selected by a panel of previous award winners. Golden Apple Award recipients earned "finalist" status in the program, distinguishing them as the top tier of the 2012 nominees along with those ultimately chosen as 2012 Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award recipients.

"The Golden Apple Achiever Award is presented to world-class teachers who make us proud of our area and its educators," Sass said. "Excellence in the classroom is the foundation of a strong future, and these teachers are building that foundation every day."

The Arch Coal Foundation honors teachers annually. The public is encouraged to nominate excellent classroom teachers, including past Golden Apple Award winners, for the 2013 Teacher Achievement Award program this fall.
