Rodeo heat up as weather turns cold

Calf wrestling in fine form at this past Friday's high school rodeo event at the Carbon Fairgrounds.

The weather held out and the facility was in great shape for this years Carbon High School Rodeo. After a major renovation, high school competitors took to the fairgrounds for the first time looking for officials scores.

Starting with the younger ropers, Zach Jensen a Freshman at Mont Harmon left the roping box a little early costing him placing in the top 10 at both Carbon and Emery Rodeos. On a brighter note, Pinnacle Senior Cali Moon placed in the top 20 out of 77 competitors in the pole bending event at Carbon and had a couple downed poles in Emery. Cali is currently sitting 10th in the state in the pole bending event.

JoeCee Heil, a junior at Carbon, had a great weekend in the breakaway roping event, according to her coaches. She roped her calf in 5.5 seconds, and ended up eighth overall out of 64 breakaway ropers at Emery.

The Bulls definitely prevailed during the rodeo this weekend as only four bull riders out of 24 hung on for the eight second whistle. Pinnacle junior, Dalton Rudman and Carbon Senior Garrett Gibson made a great showing at the event. They are both currently in the top standings within the state. Dalton is sitting at 11th with Garrett running sixth in the bull riding event. Maya Anderson, a freshman at Mont Harmon competed in her first high school rodeo this weekend drawing a nice reaction from those involved with high school rodeo. "She competed very well in the barrel racing event," said Jill Ward. "We are really excited to have her on our team."

The team's next competition will take place this coming weekend (April 20-21) with the kids traveling to Logan and Tremonton to compete.

"We have heard nothing but good from the contestants, parents and spectators about our new facility and how well the rodeo was run," commented Ward. "It takes a lot of great parents and volunteers to make it all happen and we are very lucky to have all of their support."
