Carbon High girls golf starts season off on a high note

The Carbon Lady Dino Golf Team opened the 2012 season at home with a strong performance at home.

The Lady Dinos took a second place finish just behind top finisher Spanish Fork High.

Using a Modified Stableford scoring system and counting the top four scores out of six varsity players, Carbon with a total of 133, finished 9 shots behind Spanish Fork at 142.

Lexi Gagon lead the team with 37 points, Kelcy Otani made 35, Katie Felice 32 and Hailey Kirkwood had 29.

Delta came in third with 119 points and Juab, North Sanpete and Payson were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively with scores of 78, 72 and 61.

Head coach Kenji Otani said the first tournament of the year showed the girls have worked hard and are ready for the season as it continues on.

"The girls played with heart and that is all I can ask of them," Otani said in an e-mail. "A couple of them stumbled out of the gate, but never gave up and finished very strong."

With CHS having to play a new set of teams in Region 12 play, there many be an adjustment period. Otani noted that Spanish Fork moved down to class 3A from 4A and were a bit of an unknown coming into the season. After the first meet of the year, Otani said he and the team have a better understanding of the other teams in the region.

"Now we know what has to be done and we can make some adjustments. These girls are great athletes and they always make me proud," he said.
