The Carbon High swim team traveled to Richfield on Jan. 21 for Region 12 Championships and despite being one of the smaller teams to participate, the boys and girls teams competed well finishing fourth and second respectively.
Five teams participated in the event. In region if a team finishes first or second in an individual event and first in a relay event, that automatically qualifies the team for state. After that, the fastest times in the state qualify on their times, as only 24 swimmers will swim in each individual event and 16 in relay's.
Carbon's Brittney Willson captured the region champ in the 200 freestyle and is currently ranked 23rd for the state championships. Brent Keller placed second in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and for the state championships is ranked ninth in the 200 free and 16th in the 500 free. Paula Gibson finished second in the 50 free and is ranked 23rd for the state championships. Dakota Powell won region champ in both his events 50 free and 100 fly, although he won region champ in the fly, Carbon High head coach Kamera Davis decided to not have him swim in that event and swim him in another event that he has qualified for with his time.
"We think he will place high in state with his time," she said noting Powell is ranked fifth in the 50 free and 15th in the 100 free.
The boys 200 and 400 free relays are region champs as both relay finishes were extremely close and made for a exciting finish, Davis said. The relay team consist of Lance Riche, Joel Garff, Brent Keller and Dakota Powell.
Also swimming in state making it on their times will be Lance Riche in the 100 back, currently ranked 21st in state.
The girls 200 free relay consisting of Brittney Willson, Lauren Engar, Annika Hansen, and Paula Gibson, and the girls 400 free relay also qualified on their time. The girls relay team consists of Aysha Black, Annika Hansen, Paula Gibson and Brittney Willson.
