Leopoldo Maestas pleaded no contest last Tuesday to a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault with substantial bodily injury in connection with a stabbing incident in East Carbon in August. Seventh Judicial District Judge George Harmond sentenced Maestas to a term of up to one year at the Utah State Prison.
Two third-degree felony counts for possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person were dropped. The original assault charge was a third degree felony but had been reduced before Maestas entered his plea.
Maestas, 42, was arrested Aug. 10 and charged with the pistol-whipping and multiple stabbing of 61-year-old Roy Collins at the victim's home. Collins was hospitalized and treated at Castleview Hospital and later released.
