Deadline near for Arch coal teacher nominations

It's not too late to nominate an outstanding teacher for an Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award, according to Ken May, general manager of Arch Coal's Sufco mine.

The program is open to teachers in Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier counties, which surround the Dugout Canyon, Skyline and Sufco mines operated by Canyon Fuel Company, a subsidiary of major U.S. coal producer Arch Coal, Inc.

"The last day nominations will be accepted for Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Awards is Jan. 9, 2012," said May. "If you have been planning to nominate a teacher, do it now to give your nominee ample time to reflect upon and submit an application. You can do so online at www.archteacherawards.com."

The Arch Coal Foundation sends each nominee an application packet that requires responses to questions regarding teaching philosophy and why the teacher chose that profession, as well as involvement in community activities.

"The earlier you make a nomination, the more time it gives your teacher to complete the application," May explained. "Our judges expect well-thought-out and clearly presented responses."

Past recipients of the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award serve as judges. Applications are read multiple times and independently scored. The Arch Coal Foundation makes $3,500 personal, cash awards to five classroom teachers. The award recipients are expected to be announced in spring 2012.
