Carbon High wrestlers compete well at first home meet

While the record might not reflect the efforts of the team, the Carbon High wrestling team took the experience from the Carbon Duels that they will use going forward through the rest of the season.

The team is still transitioning from previous head coach Tom Watkins to new head coach Theral Mikesell.

With a lot of new wrestlers on the squad, Mikesell said the team has used the early season matches to focus on getting the basics down and perfecting their technique on the mat.

Carbon finished the duel with a 2-3 record, defeating Grand and the Wasatch JV team and losing to Union, Duchesne and Monticello.

The Dinos lost to Monticello by two points, despite having to forfeit 30 points due to not having enough wrestlers in the competing weight classes. Currently the team has five weight classes that do not have a wrestler ready to compete in them, Mikesell said.

Mikesell said the team showed a lot of improvement at the meet since the beginning of the season and feels with more practice and upcoming meets the team should continue to get better.

"The duels showed us some things we will need to work on," Mikesell said. "As a coach, I was happy with their performance and I think it was a step in the right direction."
