Continuing their success hasn't come easy for the Helper Junior High wrestling team. But somehow, despite being down early in each math, the Rams are displaying a hungry attitude and a will to win.
Before Thanksgiving break, the Rams faced off against the Canyon View Cougars on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Facing an early match deficit, the Rams battled back to win the league match, 45-41.
In the 75 lbs weight class, Helper's Nathaniel Metzger lost by pinfall to Canyon View's Colton Allred, putting the Cougars ahead 6-0.
In the 81 and 87 lbs weight classes, Helper Junior High took forfeits. This upped the Canyon View lead to 18-0.
Helper's Ryan Hansen, wrestling at 93 lbs, got the Rams on the scoreboard as he attained a pinfall victory against Canyon View's Cameron Petterson, cutting the lead to 18-6.
At 99 lbs, Helper's Anthony Archuletta lost by pinfall to Darrell Guyman.
At 105 lbs, Helper's McCoy Brinkerhoff got a pinfall victory over Canyon View's Justin Jennings.
Helper suffered back-to-back-to-back losses, in the 111, 118 and 124 lbs classes. At 111 lbs, Helper's Jacky Burge lost by decision to David Bird. At 118, Helper's Robby Jewkes lost by pinfall to Kallon Curtis. And in the 124 lbs class, Helper's Alex Ruiz lost a close 9-8 decision to Canyon View's Abram Hadfield, which pushed the Cougars lead to 36-12.
As they have done in their previous matches, Helper strung together a number of wins to get back in the match.
At 132 lbs, Helper's Kyler Wood got a pinfall victory over Marcus Castra.
At 140, Johnny O'Hearon defeated Canyon View's Matt Mecham by pinfall.
At 148 lbs, Ryan Atwood scored a 10-6 decision win over George Verezuela.
At 155 lbs, Helper's Caleb Urritia won a pinfall decision over Hall Guyman.
At 165 lbs, Rylan Brinkerhoff scored a pinfall victory over Canyon View's Ty Mecham, giving the Rams their first lead at 39-36.
Helper's string of wins was snapped when at 175 lbs, Helper's Nathan Pritt lost by superior decision 16-0 to Oscar Flores.
Needing a victory at heavyweight, Helper's Marcus Santi defeated Micah Bass by pinfall to secure the win for Helper, 45-41.
