Last year, an organization called the National Retail Federation said that 212 million people traveled the shopping aisles on Black Friday. They spent $45 billion (estimated), or about $365 per individual. That was over six percent more than they did the year before on the same weekend. Interestingly enought, over 60 percent of the shoppers were done with their buying by mid morning on Friday.
The gain in how much people spent last year over 2009 took the shopping expenditures per individual within $10 of the 2008 levels, a figure which reflected better times economically.
But in actuality the figures for 2010 were better than they were in the middle of the ecomomic boom of six years previous to the 2009 economic downturn. In 2005, 140 million shoppers spent about $300 a person.
Purchase trends themselves have pretty much stayed the same in the last decade. The most purchased items during Black Friday weekend are clothing, consumer electronics, toys, books, DVDs and video games. Sporting goods and jewelry also are strong purchase options.
