Pedestrian struck on Ridge Road
A 31-year-old Price man was struck and killed by a car as he was pulling weeds on the side of Ridge Road about four miles south of Price Thursday morning.
The Utah Highway Patrol identified the victim as Aaron Simms.
The UHP reported that the accident occurred at 8:25 a.m. at 800 East Ridge Road, in front of the Nielson Construction offices. Simms was weeding about ten feet south of the pavement when a westbound car driven by Jamie Lynn Mercurio, 31, Price, apparently drifted across the center line into the opposite lane, then off the shoulder of the road, striking Simms.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mercurio was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the collision. UHP was still investigating possible charges Monday.
Flagger run over, dragged on SR 10
A Castle Dale woman is dead and a Huntington man is in the Carbon County Jail awaiting possible automobile homicide charges following a Saturday morning hit-and-run which police believe was fueled by alcohol.
Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson Joe Dougherty stipulated that Linda Potter, 54, of Castle Dale was carried approximately 250 feet early Saturday morning by a southbound pickup that hit her as she was directing northbound traffic on SR 10 through a single-lane construction zone. The crash occurred at 1:30 a.m. just south of Price near Four Mile Hill, where Potter was working for Nielson Construction.
The pickup's driver, 28-year-old Luke Shroyer of Huntington, continued through the construction zone after hitting Potter, later telling investigators that he "thought he had hit a deer."
Investigators reported that there were no signs that Shroyer stopped or slowed down after the impact. They further estimate that the pickup was traveling well above 30 mph when the incident occurred. Emery County Sheriff's deputies caught up with Shroyer in Huntington, approximately 20 miles south of the fatal crash.
UHP officials conducted a field sobriety test and blood draw which confirmed a .119 blood-alcohol level, far above Utah's legal limit of .08. The UHP release indicated that the pickup's driver reported being in a Price area bar prior to the crash.
Shroyer has been arrested and booked into the Carbon County Jail on investigation of automobile homicide. Formal charges will be decided on by the county attorney.
Collision fatal for young bicyclist
Tragedy continued to rock Utah's Castle Country over the weekend as the Utah Highway Patrol reported that a 7-year-old boy was hit and killed while riding his bike Saturday afternoon near Cleveland.
UHP stated that Jared Anderson of Castle Dale was with his family visiting relatives just outside of Cleveland when the incident occurred. Anderson reportedly borrowed a bike and may have had difficulty working the hand and foot brakes as he coasted down the home's long, steep driveway into SR 155, colliding with a westbound Toyota Avalon. Anderson was stuck at mile post three.
UHP spokesperson Joe Dougherty reported that the vehicle's driver stated he was going approximately 50 mph when the boy rode in front of the car. Anderson died at the scene.
Dougherty said Sunday that investigators considered that the crash was an accident.
