Lila Canyon earns safety award

UtahAmerican Energy's Lila Canyon Mine recently received the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute's (RMCMI) safety award for small operator, underground mine. The award, which was presented at RMCMI's 107th annual conference in Keystone, Colorado, recognized Lila Canyon Mine's safety record of no lost-time accidents since operations commenced on January 1, 2009 - more than 900 days.

UtahAmerican Energy, Inc. is an independent operating subsidiary of Ohio-based Murray Energy Corporation, the nation's largest independent coal producer.

David Hibbs, president of UtahAmerican Energy, Inc., who accepted the award on behalf of the company and its miners, complimented the miners who earned the honor. "We have an outstanding professional workforce that consistently demonstrates a strong safety ethic, who watch out for each other and make sure we all go home safely every night," he said.

The mine now employs 21 miners producing development coal. When fully operational, Lila Canyon Mine is expected to employ longwall mining with an annual production of five million tons and a workforce of approximately 300. Active production of the mine's coal reserves is expected to last between 20 and 30 years.
