Helper American Legion holds on to first place despite loss

The winning streak came to an end Monday night for the Helper Legion Team. Helper played the Kearns 19u team in Salt Lake City and lost 7-4.

Derek Young pitched the entire game and really did a great job against this older Kearns team, but it wasn't enough to overcome some early errors and a weak offensive performance. Helper scored three runs in the top of the first. And things looked good. Then they came out and committed four errors in the first two innings that allowed Kearns to score six.

After the second Helper settled down and played solid defense but the damage was done. Helper's bats struggled all night and the team only managed five hits.

"I was disappointed in the way we started the game even though we scored three runs," said coach Jeff Cisneros. "Our concentration was not there and our focus was somewhere else."

The loss puts Helper at 11-2. They are still in first place, but need to pick up at least one win in the next two games to be assured of maintaining the top spot in the league.

They take on Murray on the road on Wednesday for one game.
