A 56-year-old Price man and a 12-year-old Boy Scout were killed in separate lightning strikes in the region Monday and Wednesday.

On Monday, Joseph Louis Geiser IV was struck by lightning while he was out in the area of the Wedge Overlook, about 20 miles east of Castle Dale, in the San Rafael Desert, according to the Emery County Sheriff's Office.

On Wednesday, another bolt hit two scouts at the Scofield Scout Camp near Madsen Bay, killing one and injuring the other. Both were 12 years old.

Helper Fire Chief Mike Zamantakis said his rescue team responded but CPR efforts could not save the boy who died.

The injured scout was taken by ambulance to Utah Valley Hospital.

Sheriff James Cordova did say that the Scofield victims were from a South Salt Lake troop.

In the Wedge incident, Emery County emergency services responded to the call at 3:55 p.m. At the scene, they found CPR was already being performed on Geiser by a family member who was with him. Despite their efforts, emergency personnel were unable to revive Geiser and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Geiser was an outdoorsman and coal miner worked at Deer Creek Mine for 31 years.
