Cold Springs conifers will survive 'fir' another year

Sun Advocate associate editor

Wildlife and forestry officials have given a one-year stay of execution to subalpine fire trees in the Cold Springs Wildlife Management Area on the Tavaputs Plateau.

The trees had been scheduled for incineration in a prescribed fire this week, but the blaze was put off because of wet weather. Fire fighters had other commitments and officials saw no point in having crews hang around waiting for conditions to dry.

The burn was designed to remove the conifers to allow aspen to repopulate some areas of the forest. Aspen shoots and trees make better browsing for deer and elk.

Habitat enhancement will have to wait another year.
